Ministry of Industry officials and oil company representatives visited Tataouine to implement a regional employment program. They agreed to create over 218 direct and indirect jobs in oil companies.
A May 27, 2011 press release stated that no more than 6 oil field facilities in Tataouine are unused. This contradicts rumors of 100 oil companies operating in the region.
These companies include the Italian-Tunisian oil company (SITEP), the Italian oil group ENI, the Austrian energy company OMV, the Canadian company STORM, the Canadian oil company Winstar, and the Southern Permit Development and Exploitation Company (SODEPS).
These companies currently employ 500 people, excluding jobs in oil supply and service companies.
The problem lies with job seekers who only want oil company jobs, demanding a minimum salary of 1000 dinars without skills. This contradicts earlier negotiations.
The 218 new jobs represent the first phase of a significant regional employment policy.
