6 Resolutions to Avoid Feeling Overwhelmed at Work

You work too much, yet at the end of the day you feel like you haven't really made progress. You waste time in meetings that are too long. You are constantly interrupted. You are overwhelmed by emails that you can't manage. And that phone that keeps ringing or sending you messages, even at indecent hours...

Stop! Before you head for burnout, regain control of the situation with a few good resolutions.

Resolution N°1: Optimize your time
Focus on your priorities. Anticipate high-stakes deadlines by planning milestones in your agenda. Allocate a clearly visible time budget to work on substantial issues. Allow yourself to turn off your phone and email to work on an important file. Dare to tell your colleague Bertrand that you will gladly help him solve his problem...this afternoon, once you have finished the report you promised to send to your client today.

Resolution N°2: Improve your communication
You have good ideas that just need to be valued. Set aside time to prepare your meetings with your managers. Highlight the benefits for the company. Welcome criticism graciously as elements to integrate into your thinking to propose an even better solution. By preparing to be flexible, you will halve your stress.

Resolution N°3: Speak up in meetings to give your opinion

Dare to speak up in meetings led by your colleagues or managers. Give your opinion constructively and explicitly link it to the meeting's objective...a diplomatic way of letting them know that the digression or sterile debate has lasted long enough.

Resolution N°4: Dare to tell your colleagues when they disturb you

Take the initiative to go see Archibald who talks too loudly in the open space to negotiate some rules of conduct with him. Again, be diplomatic: instead of saying "you talk too loud", prefer "I need to concentrate on a sensitive file, would it be possible for you to speak softly?"

Resolution N°5: Think about taking care of your career...

No one is better placed than you to take care...of yourself. Take the time to question your career path, your talents, what you want to do with your professional life and your life in general. If what you are currently doing no longer makes much sense to you, consider taking a professional turn.

Resolution N°6: But set aside time for other things!

Tonight, go see a movie to relax. Everyone speaks highly of "Untouchable", it seems to be a real breath of fresh air. Come on, go ahead! Download the "Allocine" app on your smartphone right away and check the next showtimes near you. Set aside regular time in your life to cultivate yourself, broaden your horizons, and develop your inner balance. One last tip: note these private appointments in your professional agenda; this will prevent you from inadvertently sacrificing them.
