Stagnation or development?
Today, staying more than 10 years in the same position or company is quite rare. The desirable duration is rather 3 to 5 years. If you stay longer, you have to ask yourself why you are staying: is it because of insecurity or because you are still stimulated by your tasks and your environment?
Indeed, clinging to your job out of fear of change can be harmful. Because when change comes, you are not well prepared.
Even if you stay in a job for a long time because you love your work, you must beware of stagnation. Today, you have to develop and constantly prove yourself, and keep up to date through training, by becoming a member of a professional association and by being on the lookout for innovations in your field.
Building your reputation
Staying in the same job, however, has many advantages, including proving yourself and building your reputation. It is over time that you complete your projects, you deepen your work and skills, you acquire mastery of your tasks and your field of work.
When an employer sees that a candidate has changed jobs every year, they wonder if it is worth investing in that person. To build your reputation, you must prove yourself in a company and accept the realities of work. Even if you love your profession, there are always difficulties to overcome.
A matter of perspective
Ultimately, it's all a matter of perspective... and knowing how to present yourself! If a person simply says that they worked 20 years in a warehouse, an employer may wonder if they are motivated. But if they say that they have developed excellent experience in warehouse management, that they loved their work and that they are ready to put their expertise at the employer's service, they give a very different vision of their career!
One thing is certain, you no longer arrive in a position by simply settling in comfortably. Today, you must always be ready for another journey.
