6.1% Drop in Declared Investment in Industry and 46.7% Drop in Services

The Agency for the Promotion of Industry and Innovation (APII) has just published data for January 2015 compared to the previous year. A 6.1% decrease in declared investment in industry was recorded, against a more significant decrease of -46.7% in the services sector. Indeed, total declared investments in industry fell from 174.2 to 163.6 million dinars (MD).

For the first month of 2015, the textile and clothing industries and the agri-food industries were the only ones to record positive growth, with +220% and +73.1% respectively. Other sectors, however, saw declines: -84.9% for chemical industries, -65.9% for leather and footwear industries, -32.3% for mechanical and metallurgical industries, and -16.4% for the construction materials, ceramic and glass industries. Foreign investment (mixed or 100% foreign) fell by 65.3%, from 52.2 to 18.1 MD. Mixed investments fell from 48.9 to 12.1 MD, a decrease of 75.3%, while 100% foreign investments increased from 3.3 to 6 MD, an increase of 81.8%. Declared investments in the Eastern regions decreased by 5.7%, from 120.1 to 113.2 MD. The same is true for the Western regions, which recorded a decrease of 6.9%, from 54.1 to 50.4 MD. For regional development zones, investment decreased by 34.9%, from 96.9 to 63.1 MD.

In January 2015, 294 projects were declared, corresponding to an investment amount of 163.6 MD and the creation of 4,631 jobs. Compared to the previous month, during which 388 projects, 658 MD of investment and 6,254 jobs were declared, January 2015 saw a decrease of 24.2% in projects to be carried out, a decrease of 75.1% in declared investments and a decrease of 26% in jobs to be created. Regarding the services sector, January 2015 saw the declaration of 908 service projects corresponding to an investment amount of 57.9 MD and the creation of 2,914 jobs. Compared to the previous month, during which 873 projects, 164.1 MD of investment and 3,001 jobs were declared, January saw a 4% increase in projects to be carried out, a 64.7% decrease in declared investments and a 2.9% decrease in jobs to be created.
