StepStone offers some tips for writing your cover letter.
1. Describe your thoughts when you read the job posting
A job posting always makes you think; it sparks your interest, otherwise you wouldn’t apply. Consider what you thought when you first saw the posting and mention it in your introduction: "When I saw your ad on StepStone, my first thought was: this is the perfect job for me. I will explain why in this letter."
2. Choose an introduction related to the company
Think about the company you’re applying to. Is it a creative advertising agency? A more formal law firm? Start with a sentence that matches the company’s atmosphere. Be serious, but not presumptuous. Consider how you would receive this sentence if you were the recruiter.
3. Immediately highlight your interests and skills
In your introduction, mention your strengths and how they perfectly match the company. For example: "Since starting my law studies, I’ve known I want to advise businesses on legal matters. The ‘Legal Counsel’ position in your company perfectly matches my profile."
4. Discuss current events
Relevant current events matter to all companies. Think of a news item or current theme related to the position. For example: "More and more children are affected by obesity. As a dietitian, I want to help fight this. That’s why I’m very interested in the ‘Children’s Dietitian’ position in your organization." Avoid negative topics about the company.
