The American job search website CareerCast reveals its ranking of the best and worst jobs in 2014. It's better to do mathematics than become a logger, firefighter, or print journalist.
Are you a student, recent graduate, and still undecided about your future? Or a high school student, unsure of what you are passionate about for your professional future? The American job search website CareerCast can help you find your way, or at least identify those that are clearly to be avoided, by revealing its ranking of 200 jobs, from best to worst of the year 2014. In conclusion, it is better to focus for 2015 towards computer science, medicine and mathematics than to want to become a logger, firefighter, flight attendant or even... journalist.
By mixing several criteria such as the work environment, which contains emotional and physical factors, income, job prospects (hiring potential, sector growth and unemployment rate) and the stress inherent in the function, CareerCast establishes a score per job. The goal is to obtain the lowest possible score. Scientific professions are omnipresent in the top 10 best jobs of 2014. The "best job of 2014" is, according to CareerCast, simply the profession of mathematician. High average income (82,000 euros according to CareerCast) and growing, good hiring prospects and fairly low stress level, the profession obtains the best score with 63 points. It thus precedes the function of university professor, second with 73 thanks to very strong hiring prospects by 2022 and a very pleasant work environment. Note that it is not certain that this profession will obtain the same place in a French study.
Health professions driven by the aging population
Then come the professions of statistician (3rd) and actuary (4th), still in the field of mathematics. Computer science is also well represented with computer engineer (7th) and systems analyst (8th). The health sector is also very present in the top 10, with the classic professions of dentist (6th) and speech therapist (10th), but also with professions related to the aging population. Thus, the CareerCast website indicates that it is wise to become an audiologist (the professional who prevents, evaluates and treats hearing disorders, 5th in the ranking) or an occupational therapist (9th), a profession that should experience 29% growth by 2022 according to the American site. All these professions benefit from very favorable growth and hiring prospects and high average salaries, despite sometimes average scores regarding the work environment and job stress.
At the other end of the ranking, some professions seem to be in decline. The reasons for their fall, a sector of activity in poor condition (this is the case for flight attendants or print journalists), very bad or stressful working conditions, all combined with average salaries in decline. Thus, among the 10 worst jobs to hold in 2014, we find prison guards, chefs, firefighters, taxi drivers and military personnel, the most stressful job of 2014 according to CareerCast. The work environment, stress and hiring prospects for the logging profession do not receive any good points according to the site. The final score obtained of 739 points makes it the worst job of 2014.
