How to choose your postgraduate studies

The process of choosing postgraduate studies, preparing application files, interviews, and waiting for results is a tedious and sometimes stressful process.

You should know that the complexity of the registration processes is sometimes deliberate to carry out a first selection. For example, the dissertations required for entry into some postgraduate diplomas discourage many students. Don't let these criteria stop you.

The first thing to define is what type of postgraduate study is accessible to you, given your level of education and experience.

The more in-depth the guidance and information phase, the more coherent your project will be, the better you will be able to argue your motivations during the selection interviews, and the more likely you are to integrate the postgraduate program suited to your professional motivations.

Sometimes the choice of your postgraduate studies corresponds to a double specialization logic. Indeed, doing postgraduate studies in a dual competence strategy means adding a new set of knowledge and skills to your training. This can be particularly relevant if you wish to enrich your initial training (for example, complementing a technical training with management training) or if you wish to make a career change.
However, if you opt for a specialization strategy, your postgraduate studies must be a logical continuation of your initial training and must allow you to acquire specific, distinctive skills in your field. In this specific case, it is essential to ensure that this specialization corresponds to a real need in the job market.

Whatever strategy you choose, you must ensure:

  • consistency with your professional project and complementarity with your initial training,
  • professional or academic recognition of such training,
  • the reputation of the institution where you will follow your postgraduate studies,
  • openness to the international,
  • the opportunities that postgraduate studies will offer you (find out about graduating classes)
the effectiveness of integration into working life (networking during the course with professionals, internships, alumni network, etc.).
