Boost your memory!

Do you feel your memory is getting worse? Are you forgetting more and more small things, or even important things? Do you have to write things down so you don’t forget them?

Remember that this is perfectly normal. With the advent of new information and communication technologies, we use them less and less. We use our phones, tablets, and computers to remember things for us. We forget to exercise that muscle. We forget not to forget. Wanting to free our minds from unnecessary things, we have temporarily weakened it.

The 80s and 90s are long gone. We knew our phone numbers by heart, as well as the entry codes to buildings.

Have we damaged our mental abilities? Certainly not. Human memory only declines very slightly after the age of 65 (about 1 to 2%).

However, to remember and memorize, we must remain attentive and make an intellectual effort. No information will be retained if we do not repeat it and, even more, if we are not interested in it or not enough.

How to boost your memory?

1. On your way to work in the morning, take a new, different route that requires a slight mental effort. Break your habits; habit is the most common trap for memory.

2. When you arrive at the office, take the time to learn a phone number, an email address, a building entry code, or write down your to-do list for the day. You can only store data through repetition. So, repeat, repeat…

3. After your work meetings, take a few minutes to write down, or think through, the minutes, even if it is not your responsibility.

4. When you go home in the evening, try to remember the different moments of the day, even specific situations: best moment, worst moment, people you met, new points, places, meals and dishes you ate, clothes you or others wore… Within 15 days, you will significantly increase your memory capacity.

5. On weekends, spend as much time as possible exercising and/or reading. Your reading will best help you structure information in your mind and therefore retain it.
