Each salesperson faces situations where a good knowledge of the market and the product isn't always enough. Being presentable and having self-confidence are key ingredients for a successful sale.
A sale can sometimes feel like a confrontation, which is why many salespeople say their job is difficult and stressful. However, by replacing the fear of failure with a positive approach and confidence in success, selling quickly becomes a pleasant experience. Here are a few steps to master in order to succeed.
A CLEAR PRESENTATION
If you're nervous, you'll tend to rush your speech. Consider the sales process positively and speak calmly. Your speech should be clear, fluid and audible. To know if your message is understood, pay attention to your customer's body language and ask questions about the points you've just discussed. Take your time and don't be afraid of silence.
Your appearance and behavior directly influence the trust others place in you. Take care of your presentation and remember that a clean suit, as well as a good haircut, send a message to the customer. Good posture, a firm handshake and pleasant manners are all positive signs.
However, don't expect your physical attributes or your outfit to compensate for insufficient preparation or knowledge. Insecurity stems from the efforts you make to hide your shortcomings; it undermines your confidence.
FACING FAILURE
A potential customer may not like you, or may not like your product or the way you're trying to sell it, and the prospect of rejection is indeed demoralizing. The first lesson to remember when wanting to gain confidence is that negative feelings are unproductive and unfounded.
Your opinion of yourself is more important than the supposed opinion of others about you. Don't say or think "NO" instead of someone, but rather acknowledge their right to refuse an opportunity that was lost for them.
