A team can be defined as a group of people interacting to achieve a common goal, which involves a distribution of tasks and the convergence of the team members' efforts. This definition highlights three essential characteristics of a work team:
Common Goal: an ultimate goal to achieve, a final product to realize; The goal corresponds more to the ultimate objective aimed for by the team members or, in other words, to the "end" pursued by the group members. To identify the common goal of a team, simply ask yourself what the final product that the team members have to realize together should be.
Task to operationalize: an operation that relies on everyone's means, resources and tools as well as a specific procedure to follow; The task, on the other hand, refers rather to how one should go about achieving the common goal. What means will the team members use to achieve their goal? In some cases, several resources, instruments or tools will be available; several procedures, methods, or techniques will prove effective; several contexts will seem relevant. In other cases, several steps will have to be taken; in what order will they be carried out? Who will do what?
Convergence of each member's efforts: a collaboration, during the execution of tasks, which takes place in a healthy work environment and in solidarity. The convergence of each member's efforts concerns the personal contribution that each person provides to the team and the interactions between the members. In this sense, the team is a fragile system that is highly dependent on the individuals who compose it, since its total energy depends on that of each of its members and the quality of the interactions between these people.
