Tunisia Economy-Employment: Tiny Decrease in Unemployment Rate

The unemployment rate reached 15.2% during the first quarter of 2014, compared to 15.3% for the fourth quarter of 2013, a decrease of 0.1 points, according to a report published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on its website.
According to the results of the National Survey on Population and Employment of the first quarter of 2014, the number of unemployed reached 605,800 out of a total active population of 3,998,000.
The unemployment rate for men is estimated at 12.7% during the first quarter of 2014 and 21.5% for women, compared to 12.8% and 21.9% respectively during the fourth quarter of 2013.
As for the number of unemployed graduates, it reached 241,300 for the first quarter of 2014, a rate of 31.3% compared to 31.9% during the fourth quarter of 2013.
According to the same survey, the unemployment rate affecting higher education graduates reached 21.2% for men and 40.8% for women.
Regarding job creation, there were 23,800 jobs created until the end of March, compared to 27,500 for the fourth quarter of 2013. Comparing these figures to those of the fourth quarter of 2013, net job creation for men amounts to 9,400 jobs and 14,400 jobs for women.
