The Meknassi phosphate mine (Sidi Bouzid) will begin operations in October 2013, with a production capacity of nearly 500,000 tons, stated Nidhal Ouerfelli, Secretary of State to the Minister of Industry in charge of Energy and Mines.
Speaking at the 5th National Colloquium on Geological Heritage, held from May 7-9, 2013, at the initiative of the National Mining Office (ONM) in Gammarth (Northern Tunis suburbs), Mr. Ouerfelli added that this mine, whose operating permit was granted by the Ministry of Industry to the Gafsa Phosphate Company (CPG), will guarantee nearly 500 jobs and strengthen national production, which is in demand abroad.
The Secretary of State emphasized that most phosphate extraction and exploitation units have recently resumed their activities thanks to the understanding shown by the inhabitants of the mining basin.
He specified that phosphate is transported in 8 trips daily, in addition to the transport of 7500 tons by truck.
Mr. Ouerfelli recalled that a ministerial council, held on April 11, 2013, allowed the adoption of measures aimed at boosting the activity of the CPG and the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT).
This includes implementing a strategy guaranteeing better working conditions in the mining basin and providing financial support to the company.
