The Bank for Financing Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (Bfpme) approved financing for 363 projects in 2011, with investments totaling 83.7 million dinars, compared to 286 projects approved in 2010 (68.3 MDT), an increase of 23%.
Figures recently published by the bank, created in 2005 with capital of 100 million dinars, show a modest number of projects created in the interior regions compared to Greater Tunis, which alone accounts for 120 projects. They also show that the number of innovative projects remains low.
The regional distribution of projects financed last year by the bank shows that the South-West region has the lowest share, with only 25 projects out of a total of 363. The South-East region comes in second with 29 projects and an estimated credit amount of 9 million dinars.
The lion's share goes to the Greater Tunis district, which has 120 projects financed with investments of around 22.3 million dinars. Second place is occupied by the Central-West region, to which 37 projects and a total of 9.1 million dinars in credit were allocated.
Regarding the sectoral distribution, the statistics reveal a predominance of the industrial sector (225 projects), followed by the services sector (84 projects), then the new communication technologies sector (20 projects). The energy sector occupies last place with only 3 projects.
Since its creation until the end of 2011, the Bfpme, a bank whose vocation is to support promoters and finance SMEs, has financed 1325 projects with the capacity to employ more than 27,000 people.
