Couples who commute together are (more) happy

People are happier in their relationships if they both travel the same route to work every morning. This is the conclusion of studies conducted with 419 respondents from the United States and Hong Kong.

Two surveys, conducted with 280 Americans and 139 Hong Kong residents in couples, show that people are happier in their relationship if they commute to work the same way as their partner. "This is true regardless of whether or not you leave at the same time as your spouse," explains the research team, led by Irene Huang of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Going in the same direction makes the other person more attractive

The link between relationship satisfaction and the route to work is independent of the number of years of marriage, the number of children, income or gender. Respondents who, for their job, had to travel in the opposite direction to their partner, were significantly less happy in their relationship. A new experiment, following the first, then showed that all participating couples felt more attracted to their spouse when they entered a room if they commuted in the same direction every morning than if they took an opposite or different direction.
