Climbing the ladder of success within a company requires consistent effort and genuine commitment: it's about knowing the opportunities and means to succeed and, while no company will ever criticize you for wanting to progress, or for having a career that follows an upward trajectory, you must still take into account certain laws, rules and procedures...
Be curious and involved.
There's a time for everything, even at work. So, being ambitious and letting it be known is positive. But starting your career in the company by banging your fists to show you want to progress faster isn't!
The key to success is success: succeed in your first assignments and you will be entrusted with others, until the moment when you are offered better and more.
That said, you have everything to gain by explaining your goals and wishes to your superiors during your performance review. Start by presenting your results and using them as arguments, without being insistent, capricious or aggressive. Dare to ask your boss questions. Questioning shows interest. This will reveal your strong motivation.
However, ask the right questions and remember to prepare for each of your reviews (especially your individual review).
In any case, take your time, especially to refine your strategy. Take advantage of being in this position, within this company, to observe and understand from the inside, to integrate things, to make its reality, its codes, and its workings your own. Take an interest in its manager promotion policy, ask others how they were appointed, what data and obligations they had to consider, how long it took them to wait, etc... Also consider identifying who stays and who leaves...
Closely study the possibilities.
To succeed in internal mobility, you must proceed in the same way as to obtain a job, that is, be vigilant, organized, attentive, reactive...
Don't forget that you can stay in your current position but in a different area, a broader perimeter. Also consider that it is possible to access a cross-functional position, to lead a team...
Observing and closely studying your current professional environment will allow you to assess your chances of success. Also remember that continuing education can strengthen your skills and therefore double your chances.
Dare to leave the company.
If the situation proves to be blocked, because an external person was, for example, hired for the position you dreamed of, if someone else was preferred to you, or simply if no position is likely to become available in the coming years, do not hesitate to look outside. Have the courage to abandon your mental and material comfort to achieve your wish. Don't stop at the door, worried about the difficulties of the current market. Know that possibilities always exist and that fortune favors the bold.
