HP's Moroccan subsidiary's top management states, "There's a huge difference between the offshoring that call centers claim to do and what HP is achieving in Morocco." They add, "While call centers simply sell time by hiring cheaper operators than in Europe, the global IT giant is installing all its outsourcing platforms in its Rabat centers."
For example, with Accor hotel bookings, a typical call center only receives the call and sends raw information to the client for processing. The project HP is developing through its EDS subsidiary at Technopolis in Rabat, in partnership with CDG, is based on a complete platform.
Information collected from customer calls is processed locally. Data transferred from Morocco goes directly to the terminals of Ibis, Novotel, and other hotels in the brand to be used by end customers (hotel employees). Therefore, a significant portion of the added value is concentrated locally. Currently, the joint EDS and CDG center employs 450 people. Sources close to the project say that the number of jobs will increase to 1,500 in the medium term.
Along with this investment outlook, HP is looking to expand its offerings to other services in both BPO and ITO. Payroll, accounting, IT system maintenance—"all outsourcing services are ideal targets for us," says our source. However, it's essential to maintain the outsourcing model based on concentrating the largest share of added value locally. Note that HP's offshoring model in Morocco is not limited to exports. The group aims to achieve 30% of its turnover locally, as permitted by law.
