This was declared by Hafedh Laamouri, Minister of Professional Training and Employment, on the sidelines of the second edition of the "Acquire Languages" fair, organized today at the Tunis Congress Palace.
"Countries that welcome Tunisian workers are sometimes surprised by the poor language skills of Tunisian professionals," he underlined, in a statement reported by the Tunis-Afrique Presse (TAP) agency.
The minister insisted that poor language skills, especially those dominant in the economic field, are a major obstacle to employment in Tunisia.
However, during his speech at Columbia University in early April 2014 in New York, the head of the provisional government, Mehdi Jomaa, had stated that Tunisia is at the crossroads of three major regions - Europe, the Arab World, and Africa - and that the Tunisian people are open to their cultures and languages. "We speak the same language," he argued. "We express ourselves in the same way. These are the main and essential factors that interest every investor in being present in this area."
According to figures from the fourth quarter of 2013, compiled by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), out of a working population of 3,978,600 million people, Tunisia has more than 608,000 unemployed, representing an unemployment rate of 15.3%.
