Moroccan Fair Trade Platform Targets 40 Billion DH Market

It has signed two partnerships with Latin American and African platforms. A sales outlet will be opened at the Casablanca Central Market, with the help of a French operator.
Fair trade is not just a fad. It is gradually gaining ground in many industrialized countries in Europe and the United States. Currently, the global market is estimated at 3.5 billion euros (39 billion DH). Created in 2004, the Moroccan Fair Trade Platform (PMCE) intends to capitalize on this new consumer mindset to boost activity. This ambition was reaffirmed at its ordinary general meeting held on July 16. In this regard, partnerships were signed at the 2011 Social Forum held last February in Dakar, on the one hand with the Latin American Fair Trade Network (RELACE) and the Brazilian Platform for Fair and Solidarity Trade (Faces do Brasil), and on the other hand with the African Fair Trade Group (GACE), which brings together 5 associations from 5 different countries. This latter agreement aims in particular to "set up a real African platform for fair trade bringing together all organizations." A meeting should be held in Morocco by the end of the year, if funding allows.
The network has 40 members, individuals and legal entities
Mainly funded by international donors, such as foreign national cooperation agencies, the PMCE, very present in the debate in Morocco thanks to its collaboration with the Ministry of Economic and General Affairs, also benefits from some subsidies from local authorities and contributions from its members. The association has around forty members, including about twenty Moroccan associations or cooperatives (there are 5 SMEs created by MREs) and as many individuals. Largely dependent on these subsidies, the PMCE has focused since its creation on supporting operators. It has thus supported 4 Moroccan producers (rose water, fabric bags or argan tree) by enabling them to follow specialized training, in particular on the best way to market their products. In the same spirit, the PMCE also plans to open a sales outlet at the Casablanca Central Market, with the help of a French operator in the field.
However, this may have to wait for the regulations to evolve by precisely differentiating between local products, organic products and fair trade products. For the time being, the Ministry of Economic and General Affairs is still working on the texts. And therefore on the forthcoming creation of a label dedicated to this form of trade.
