For over 25 years, Reporters Without Borders has stood with those fighting for freedom of information in Tunisia. In October 2011, the organization opened an office in Tunis to better support the young Tunisian revolution.
Reporters Without Borders wants to see freedom of information lastingly guaranteed in Tunisia and intends to support journalists in their march towards a democracy where the press truly plays its role as a counter-power.
Office Objectives:
- Monitoring abuses and follow-up on filed complaints: the office aims to denounce intimidation, pressure, and threats against journalists and the media through advocacy actions (press releases, letters, meetings).
- Raising public and professional awareness of freedom of information (meetings and communication campaigns),
- Institutional, legal support and advocacy with authorities: the office provides legal expertise and encourages the improvement of legislation, in accordance with international standards.
- Legal support and monitoring of trials of journalists and media,
- Support for journalists, netizens, bloggers and emerging or struggling media (capacity building of regional radios, training, fight against the return of censorship)
Missions and activities:
The employee will coordinate ongoing projects and assist the project manager in the operational management of the office.
He/She will be in charge (non-exhaustive list):
- assisting the project manager with administrative formalities,
- assisting the project manager by performing secretarial tasks: drafting and sending reports, monitoring press coverage and feeding databases.
- ensuring, alongside the project manager, the monitoring of abuses and violations of press freedom, and the follow-up on filed complaints and procedures;
- monitoring the network of local correspondents (regular contact, drafting of correspondent contracts, payment of fees, etc.);
- participating, alongside the project manager, in the implementation and monitoring of projects (needs analysis, preparation of terms of reference for training, equipment ordering, grant allocation, etc.);
- carrying out translation work and, in particular, translating press releases from the Maghreb/Middle East office.
Profile:
- Excellent spoken and literary Arabic
- Fluent French – spoken, read, written
- Good writing skills in both French and Arabic
- Good analytical and listening skills
- Good knowledge and practice of the Tunisian internet
- Strong interest in the media
- Neutrality in the face of a given problem
- Respect for the organization's mandate
- Excellent mastery of Office Suite (including Excel)
- Rigor – Organization – Interpersonal skills – Dynamism and enthusiasm for the cause defended
