Unemployment in Morocco Decreases in the First Quarter of 2013

The unemployment rate in the Kingdom decreased by 0.5 points in the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same period last year, according to a note from the High Commission for Planning.

Indeed, the active population in unemployment decreased by 4.7% nationally, falling from 1,130,000 in the first quarter of 2012 to 1,077,000 unemployed in the same quarter of 2013, representing 53,000 fewer unemployed (-31,000 in urban areas and -22,000 in rural areas).

The most significant decreases in this rate were recorded among young people aged 25 to 34 (-1 point) and graduates (-0.9 points). The underemployment rate also fell by 0.7 points.

During the first quarter of 2013, the active population aged 15 and over reached 11,474,000 people, a slight increase of 0.4% compared to 2012.

However, the activity rate decreased by 0.6 points, falling from 48.2% in the first quarter of 2012 to 47.6% in the same quarter of 2013.

In terms of employment, 126,000 paid jobs were created during the period, 78,000 in urban areas and 48,000 in rural areas. Despite this result, the HCP notes a decrease of 0.4% in the active population in rural areas, against a growth of 1.2% in urban areas.

The services and industry sectors, including crafts, recorded the creation of 243,000 and 20,000 jobs respectively, corresponding to an increase in employment volume of 6.3% for the first sector and 1.5% for the second.

On the other hand, job losses were observed in the agriculture, forestry, and fishing sector, with 100,000 jobs lost, corresponding to a decrease in the sector's employment volume of 2.5%. The construction sector also recorded a loss of 56,000 jobs, or -5.1% of the sector's employment volume.

According to the High Commission for Planning, the main reasons leading active people to find themselves unemployed are the cessation of activity of the employing establishment or dismissal (27.2%), the end of studies after obtaining a diploma (20.6%), and finally the end of studies without obtaining a diploma (14.2%).
