Morocco under the scrutiny of the World Travel Council

Marrakech is a playground for the jet-set. Agadir attracts mainly European retirees to its seaside resorts. Ouarzazate highlights its cultural assets... Moroccan tourism has found its place among the world's leading destinations and is significantly boosting growth: at least, that's the conclusion of the latest statistics from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).

The country, which for the first time in its history exceeded 10 million tourists in 2013 with a 7% increase in arrivals compared to 2012, is regaining its vibrancy.

18.7% of GDP
Tourism remains one of the main drivers of the Moroccan economy. It provides nearly 1.8 million jobs (direct and indirect), or 16.7% of total employment. It contributes positively to the trade balance: tourism-related revenue amounts to $8.78 billion (approximately 73.9 billion dirhams). The increase should continue in 2014, according to the report.

The tourism sector accounts for 18.7% of Morocco's GDP. It generated $19.7 billion (approximately 165.8 billion dirhams). In 2013, investments in tourism amounted to $3.68 billion (approximately 31 billion dirhams).
Tourism remains more than ever a strategic economic sector for the kingdom, at a time when Lahcen Haddad, the minister in charge, has set the goal of reaching the top 20 tourist nations by 2020.
