The unemployment rate was 8.2% in the second quarter of 2010.
The number of unemployed people increased by 4.2%, or 38,000.
The unemployment rate was 8.2% in the second quarter of 2010, compared to 8% in the same quarter of 2009, an increase of 0.2%. This is what emerges from the latest information note from the High Commission for Planning (HCP) on the labor market situation in the second quarter of 2010.
The unemployed active population increased by 4.2% nationally, rising from 911,000 in the second quarter of 2009 to 949,000 unemployed in the second quarter of 2010, an increase of 38,000.
According to the HCP, the national economy generated 140,000 jobs (92,000 in urban areas and 48,000 in rural areas). In total, 158,000 paid jobs were created (76,000 in cities and 82,000 in rural areas).
Unpaid employment, meanwhile, decreased by 18,000 jobs, resulting from the creation of 15,000 jobs in cities and a loss of 33,000 jobs in rural areas. The overall volume of employment increased from 10,539,000 to 10,679,000 between the two periods. Regarding the employment rate, it went from 46.6% to 46.4%.
It fell by 0.2 points in cities (from 38.6% to 38.4%) and by 0.1 points in rural areas (from 58.2% to 58.1%). At the sectoral level, the document indicates that construction and services are responsible for the majority of jobs created.
Construction generated 109,000 jobs (an increase of 11.4%), and services 92,000 jobs (+2.4%). In industry, 28,000 new jobs were created. In contrast, the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector saw a loss of 83,000 jobs (-1.9%), and poorly defined activities decreased by 6,000 jobs. At the end of the second quarter of 2010, the active population aged 15 and over reached 11,628,000 people, an increase of 1.6% compared to the same quarter of 2009 (+1.9% in urban areas and +1.2% in rural areas).
The activity rate fell by 0.1 point, from 50.6% to 50.5%. Depending on the place of residence, the unemployment rate increased from 12.6% to 12.7% in urban areas and from 3% to 3.3% in rural areas. In urban areas, the largest increase in the unemployment rate was recorded among people aged 45 and over (+0.6 point).
In rural areas, except for adults aged 35 to 44 whose rate decreased by 0.8 points, all other categories of the active population saw their unemployment rates increase.
The largest increases were recorded among young people aged 15 to 24 (+0.6 points) and those aged 25 to 34 (+0.8 points). Regarding underemployment of employed people aged 15 and over, its volume increased from 1,017,000 to 1,200,000 people (from 481,000 to 507,000 in cities and from 536,000 to 693,000 people in rural areas).
The underemployment rate increased from 9.6% to 11.2% (from 9.3% to 9.6% in cities and from 10.0% to 12.8% in rural areas). As a reminder, the unemployment rate was 10% in the first quarter of 2010 compared to 9.6% in the same period of 2009.
