Tourism Minister Amel Karboul, visiting Mahdia, expects around 2 million tourists in Tunisia during July and August 2014, according to TAP news agency.
Responding to journalists' questions about the drop in hotel tourist numbers compared to last season, the minister argued that the success of the Tunisian tourist season is not measured by the number of hotel tourists, but rather by "the quality of tourists." In this case, what do our hoteliers say? In other words, is this quality there?
Her department, she said, is working to solve the structural problems hindering the improvement of the quality of tourist services in order to attract quality tourists and revive the national economy.
Ms. Karboul also points out that her ministry will propose a bill to the government allowing Tunisian and foreign investors to use agricultural land for tourism projects without changing their agricultural purpose.
According to her, this bill will allow professionals in the sector to no longer depend on the summer season. She noted that this bill was developed in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture to achieve complementarity between the agricultural and tourism sectors and create jobs.
The Tourism Minister's visit to the Mahdia governorate included a meeting with tourism professionals in the region, as part of the work of the Regional Tourism Council.
