European Parliament Wants to Support Tunisia in Employment Matters

"Social advancement and regional development are not a cost but an investment," declared Slim Aidi, Minister of Employment and Vocational Training, at a conference held on June 30, 2011, at the European Parliament in Brussels on "Youth employability: from education to integration into working life."

Representing Tunisia at this conference, Mr. Aidi presented the challenges facing our country during this transition period. "We want to move forward through action, while keeping in mind that there are no miracle solutions and that we cannot tackle unemployment without laying the foundations for growth," he indicated.

The event was of particular interest because it was organized by the Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the European Parliament and by four agencies responsible for employment, labor, and vocational training. These include CEDEFOP (European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training), ETF (European Training Foundation), EUROFOUND (European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions), and EU-OSHA (European Agency for Safety and Health at Work).

According to the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training, during his stay in Brussels, Mr. Aidi held a series of meetings with European officials, including the European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs, the President of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, and the President of the Maghreb delegation to the Parliament. The discussions mainly focused on the possibilities of supporting Tunisia's program for the recovery and safeguarding of employment.

During the conference, European experts and analysts reviewed the issues of employability for young graduates or unskilled individuals. Note that the unemployment rate in Europe reached 20.8% in 2010, while the youth employment rate fell to 34.1%.

They state that among the reasons for youth unemployment are the malfunctioning of employment markets, the mismatch between supply and demand, a lack of qualifications, the inefficiency of support for job seekers, etc.

The minister was also able to learn about the various specific policies and initiatives undertaken by governments or social partners aimed at creating job opportunities and developing youth employability.
