Moroccan Urban Agencies' Output "Exceeded 100 Development Plans Per Year"

The output of urban agencies across Morocco has exceeded 100 development plans produced per year, stated the Minister of Housing, Urban Planning and Spatial Development, Mr. Ahmed Taoufiq Hejira, Friday in Tangier.

Speaking at the ceremony for the awarding of ISO 9001:2008 certification to the Tangier Urban Agency, Mr. Hejira specified that the 25 urban agencies under the ministry have produced development plans covering 90% of urban areas and 58% of rural areas.

He also noted the creation of 103 single windows nationwide, covering 70% of urban areas and 45% of rural areas, to simplify procedures for obtaining building permits.

The 25 urban agencies, employing 1,600 executives and technicians, receive some 100,000 requests for opinions annually for obtaining building permits, the minister indicated, noting that nearly 79% of these requests received a favorable opinion.

While highlighting that the budget allocated to urban agencies increased from approximately 200 million dirhams (MAD) in 2003 to 434 MAD in 2011, he asserted that these financial resources remain low compared to the effort provided.

Urban agencies represent a strategic system and an important platform for promoting investment and employment nationally, Mr. Hejira estimated, commending the efforts to improve services, as demonstrated by the quality certification of four urban agencies: Rabat-Salé, Marrakech, Taza and Tangier.

For her part, the director of the Tangier Urban Agency, Mrs. Hafida Aarab, indicated that obtaining this certification is the result of more than a year's work that has touched most of the agency's services and missions, such as urban planning and management, emphasizing the importance of continuing control, audit and modernization actions to maintain this certification.

She expressed, in this sense, the agency's desire to move forward on the path of excellence through service quality, teamwork, and strengthening human resources skills.
