As the third largest investor in Tunisia, German companies remain very important for the country's economy. German investments in 2012 were as high as rarely before. The commitment of German companies is mainly visible in the electrical wiring and components industry, but also to a lesser extent in the IT sector.
Two years after the revolution, the GDP growth rate increased to 2.7% (0% in 2011) and the export trend improved from 6.7% in 2011 to 12.9% in 2012. The unemployment rate at 17% and the inflation rate at 6% increased in 2012.
AHK Tunisia has been successfully working for 34 years to intensify Tunisian-German economic relations. As a key contact for German exporting companies established in Tunisia, as well as for new investors, it is called upon to contribute to the continuous improvement of the conditions for establishment in this country.
Establishment of German exporting companies in Tunisia
According to a geographical analysis carried out by the AHK, nearly 77% of German exporting companies are located in the following four regions: Sousse/Monastir 24.7% of companies (18.3% in 2011), Tunis 23.4% of companies (31% in 2011), Nabeul/Hammamet 16.9% of companies (18.3% in 2011) and Bizerte 11.7% of companies (18.3% in 2011).
For the textile sector, 72.4% of the companies concerned are concentrated in the following regions: Tunis 27.6% of companies (32% in 2011), Bizerte 24.1% of companies (20% in 2011) and Nabeul/Hammamet 20.7% of companies (32% in 2011).
For the electrotechnical sector, nearly 59% of companies are located in the following two regions: Sousse/Monastir 41.2% of companies (32% in 2011) and Tunis 17.6% of companies (21.4% in 2011).
50,000 direct jobs
Economic cooperation is one of the priorities of German-Tunisian bilateral relations. More than 250 German companies are established in Tunisia and together contribute to providing nearly 50,000 direct jobs in several industrial sectors.
In 2012, Germany made 99.9 million euros available for development cooperation with Tunisia. The main areas of this cooperation are the promotion of the economy and employment, the development of disadvantaged regions and environmental protection.
During the same year, this country converted part of the Tunisian debt, i.e. 30 million euros in favor of the Tunisian water sector. Finally, Germany mobilized 112 million euros for the implementation of the Tunisian solar plan, bringing the total amount of German aid to Tunisia in 2012 to 267 million euros.
On another point, it should be noted that AHK Tunisia has been contributing considerably for many years to the improvement of the production conditions offered by the "Tunisia" location.
The objective of AHK Tunisia and the Tunisian partner institutions is to continue to offer attractive establishment conditions to existing German companies and new investors, thus creating the basis for an expansion of the commitments of German and European companies in Tunisia.
