Tunisians' Priorities in 2014: Jobs, Jobs, Jobs...

Text: Employment, the economy, purchasing power, the public deficit, and terrorism are the main concerns of Tunisians for the year 2014, according to a recent "Tunisie Sondage" poll. Social issues come in second.

The survey, conducted by the marketing and opinion research institute "TUNISIE SONDAGE", takes stock of the end of the year as seen by Tunisians. The majority of respondents (66%) gave a negative assessment of 2013, while 29% felt the year was positive, and 5% did not give an opinion.

However, regarding 2014, 51% of respondents are optimistic, 48% are pessimistic, and 1% did not give an opinion.

Employment, the absolute priority

Employment is the top concern for Tunisians. 99% of them consider fighting unemployment as the absolute priority of the new government. 60% of Tunisians are optimistic about the evolution of the unemployment rate in 2014.

The survey reveals that Tunisians' priorities are clearly economic and security-related: employment (99%), the economy and growth (96%), purchasing power (92%), the public deficit (86%), terrorism (73%), and the fight against insecurity (50%).

Social issues "important but not priorities"

Social issues such as social inequalities (42%), education (52%), and health (59%) are considered important but not priorities by Tunisians. Although these issues are important, they have been relegated to the background due to the difficult economic situation and the looming terrorist threat.

The study was conducted online between December 3 and 20 on a sample of 1210 people, representative of the Tunisian population aged 18 and over. The representativeness of the sample was ensured by the quota method (gender, age of the respondent) after stratification by region and by agglomeration category.
