Tourism revenue up 36.2% by the end of May 2012 (ONTT)

Of the 1,906,382 tourists who visited Tunisia during the first five months of 2012, more than half, or 1,097,255, were Maghrebis. Libyans were the top visitors from the Maghreb with 813,476 entries, compared to 389,555 during the same period in 2011, followed by Algerians with 263,137 tourists, compared to 204,623 visitors in the first five months of 2011.
Tourism revenue reached 924.0 million dinars (MD) by the end of May 2012, according to provisional figures from the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT), compared to 678.3 MD during the same period in 2011, an increase of 36.2%. However, tourism revenue recorded during the first five months of 2012 remains 12.4% lower than that of the same period in 2010, when it amounted to 1054.4 MD according to data from the Tunisian National Tourist Office (ONTT). The number of tourist overnight stays increased to 163,746 overnight stays compared to 147,364 overnight stays during the same period in 2011, an increase of 11.1%, but a decrease of 9.3% compared to the same period in 2010 (180,533 overnight stays). Data from the ONTT shows that the number of foreign non-residents who visited Tunisia between January 1 and the end of May 2012 increased by 48.4% compared to the same period in 2011. Tunisia welcomed 1,906,382 tourists during the first five months of 2012, compared to 1,285,003 at the end of May 2011. This number remains 13.6% lower than the figures for the first five months of 2010. The Maghreb market ranks first among foreign markets with an increase of 79.9%, a total of 1,097,255 tourists compared to 609,951 in 2011. According to ONTT statistics, Libyans were the leading tourists visiting Tunisia during the first five months of 2012, with an influx of 813,476 tourists by the end of May 2012, compared to 389,555 tourists during the same period in 2011, followed by Algerians (263,137) compared to 204,623 Algerian tourists recorded in the entry figures for the first five months of 2011. The European market is ranked second.
Increase in American tourism and decrease in entries from the Middle East
Thus, the number of tourists who visited Tunisia during the first five months of this year was 755,401 European tourists compared to 491,648 tourists during the same period last year, an increase of 53.6%. Despite this progress, the number of European tourists remains down compared to the first five months of 2010, a decrease of -28.5%. European markets, considered traditional markets for Tunisia, have maintained their position in the market rankings. This includes the French market, which ranked first, with 314,022 tourists in 2012 (first five months) compared to 229,566 tourists for the same period in 2011, an increase of 36.8%. Compared to the first five months of 2011, the number of German, British and Italian tourists increased by 100.7% (from 49,882 to 100,093 tourists), 56.5% (from 62,519 to 97,858 tourists) and 53.4% with an influx of 34,077 tourists compared to 52,291 tourists respectively. American tourism has resumed its activity in Tunisia, increasing by 68.1% to 12,366 tourists compared to 7,356 tourists, despite a further decrease of 20.5% compared to the first five months of 2010. The number of American tourists who visited Tunisia is higher than that of Canadians (8,045 American tourists compared to 4,435 Canadian tourists). Conversely, the Middle Eastern market fell by 81.8% compared to the same period in 2011. Tourist arrivals thus fell from 78,378 to 14,285 tourists. According to ONTT indicators, the number of Japanese tourists increased by 184.4% during the first five months of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011, reaching 3,327 tourists after having been 1,170 Japanese tourists.
