UNWTO calls for more investment in Africa, a growing tourism market.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has called for more investment in Africa, "a growing tourism market."

At the third African Tourism Investment Forum (Investour), held in Madrid on the sidelines of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR, January 18-22), the UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, invited companies active in this sector to continue their investments in Africa.

"With adequate investments, tourist arrivals will continue to increase and investors will get an excellent return. Similarly, jobs will be created and the entire economy will only improve," according to the UNWTO Secretary-General, who recalls that Africa is one of the continents to have recorded positive growth during the last decade.

More than 25 countries, including Morocco, took part in this third edition of Investour organized by the UNWTO, Casa Africa and FITUR. The objective of this forum is to highlight the African destination and to mobilize investments in sustainable development projects on the continent.

According to the UNWTO, international tourist arrivals in Africa increased from 27 million tourists in the year 2000 to 50 million tourists in 2011.

Similarly, tourism revenue, the main source of foreign exchange for the continent, tripled in a decade, rising from 7.7 billion euros in 2000 to 30 billion euros in 2010.

The 32nd edition of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR-2012) was held from January 18 to 22 in Madrid with the participation of official delegations, professionals in the sector and exhibitors representing more than 160 countries, including Morocco.

The Kingdom participated in this fair with a typically Moroccan pavilion combining authenticity and modernity and covering an area of more than 400 m2, one of the largest at this fair, located in a prime location.

Morocco was represented at this important meeting of world tourism by a strong delegation of tourism officials and professionals, led by the Director General of the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT), Abdelhamid Addou.

Considered one of the internationally renowned tourism fairs, FITUR constitutes an important meeting platform that allows participants to define new strategies and promote their destinations.

It is also a main framework for meetings with major tour operators, as well as with professionals in tourism and air transport, with a view to establishing business relationships and generating business contacts.
