Second largest economic center in Morocco after Casablanca, Greater Agadir has experienced strong growth over the past decade. This is thanks to large infrastructure projects and a range of achievements that allow this city to pursue its biggest ambitions.
The opening of the Agadir-Marrakech highway, the development of a magnificent promenade and marina on the city's bay, the establishment of an industrial center dedicated to the fishing industry, the construction of a large stadium, and significant investments in real estate and tourism; these structuring projects, completed or nearing completion in various sectors, are all levers of growth and development at both regional and national levels.
Launched in June 2006, the Marrakech-Agadir highway, which required 4 years of work and an investment of nearly 8 billion DH, is undeniably one of the major road projects of recent years.
Two years after its opening, the impact of this 225-kilometer road extends beyond the regional level. It's part of the Europe-Africa link and the Maghreb highway.
It connects the north and south of the Kingdom, with considerable benefits for the competitiveness of the main economic sectors in the Souss region. This includes tourism (combining Marrakech's cultural tours with Agadir's seaside offerings), agriculture, fishing, trade with Europe, and attracting foreign investment.
The economy of Souss-Massa-Drâa, a very dynamic region, is thus integrated into other parts of the Kingdom, particularly Casablanca. This strengthens its competitiveness and that of southern Morocco in general, generating significant investment and employment opportunities.
Agadir, the leading seaside tourist destination, has invested heavily in recent years to expand its accommodation capacity and modernize its reception and entertainment facilities. The development of a world-class corniche, a structuring project launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, has changed the face of the city's bay and strengthened the destination's international reputation.
Extending from the corniche, the marina, built on 14 hectares with a marina, residences, shopping center, and hotel complex, is a new waterfront attraction and a major draw for the destination.
Among the major projects nearing completion, the Haliopolis fishing hub is part of a new generation of industrial parks designed to boost the national economic fabric.
Planned on 150 hectares in the Drarga commune (north of Agadir), the park (whose first phase is almost complete) should modernize the seafood processing industry and stimulate logistics activities.
The project, a regional extension of the "Halieutis" strategy, is expected to generate nearly 20,000 jobs in the long term.
In the sporting arena, the Souss prefecture will soon see the opening of a large stadium, bringing the number of new-generation large sports facilities in the Kingdom to three, after Marrakech and Tangier.
This stadium, whose construction was launched by the King in June 2004, covers an area of 60 hectares with a capacity of 45,000 seats, including 10,000 covered seats. The investment is estimated at 1 billion dirhams.
Significant social and educational projects have also been developed in various urban and rural municipalities in and around Agadir in recent years. These improve development indicators and strengthen the brand image and quality of life in this city, whose natural, economic, and human assets predestine it for an even brighter future.
