Marrakech: Carré Eden project delivered end of 2013.

“Marrakech has something invaluable,” enthuses Xavier Guerrand Hermès, vice-president of Hermès Paris, in a promotional film. “It is a city that is growing and beginning to occupy a global place. I believe that we must give it the means,” adds the Hermès heir, initiator of the Carré Eden project, which aims to nothing less than transform Guéliz, the emblematic district of the city center of Marrakech which is celebrating its centenary today.

In place of the old central market, demolished in 2005, stands a large construction site, “one of the most important real estate projects in Morocco,” boasts the Carré Eden management. On 100,000 m2 covered, a real estate complex, which should generate some 700 direct jobs, includes very high-standing residences, “110 prestigious apartments all equipped with terraces,” a mall with more than sixty brands such as Starbucks, Lacoste or Adidas, a fresh market, 700 parking spaces and the very first Radisson hotel in the country. Investment budget: “A little more than one billion dirhams, so far. We will know the final budget when we have completed the complex, which should be delivered at the end of 2013, beginning of 2014,” says Mehdi Jennane, director of operations for the project.

In the meantime, Carré Eden is celebrating the centenary of Guéliz by organizing an open-air exhibition called “100 years of Guéliz, a century of life,” which lasts until June. In parallel, the “L'magana” competition is launched: open to architects, visual artists and designers, this competition should lead to the construction of a city clock for the district.
