One Thousand Jobs Before Next Ramadan

A partnership agreement was signed Sunday at the Sfax governorate headquarters between the Ministry of Professional Training and Employment and the Lakhmi Development Foundation.

The agreement, co-signed by Mr. Abdelwaheb Maatar, Minister of Professional Training and Employment, and Ridha Jaoudi, President of the Foundation, aims to accelerate the pace of business creation, promote a culture of entrepreneurship and work, and guide the unemployed towards jobs needing skilled labor.

"Created just three months ago, the Lakhmi Foundation has set itself the goal of generating one thousand jobs before the arrival of next Ramadan," Mr. Jaoudi told the TAP agency correspondent in the region. "It promotes Islamic values in its various activities, acts independently of political parties, and interacts with all parts of society without discrimination," he added.

For his part, the Minister of Professional Training and Employment, Mr. Maatar, welcomed this initiative, stating that the ministry has begun signing a series of similar agreements to make the most of the capacities of civil society institutions in supporting job seekers and guiding them towards promising sectors, such as agriculture, construction, carpentry, plumbing, electricity, and crafts.

Several partnership agreements have been signed to this effect with several professional federations under UTICA to meet the needs for skilled labor, estimated at 100,000 jobs.

During the first half of 2012, the ministry created 61,000 stable jobs, not counting vacancies left by retirees, he revealed, noting a decrease in the unemployment rate, which fell from 18.9% (in December 2011) to 17.6% (June 2012).
