No, you are not incompetent. The proof? You were hired. Your skills are real, but your lack of confidence prevents you from seeing them, showing them, or even using them. Explanations and advice from Isabelle Danet, coach and specialist in corporate support.
In everyday life and at work, you have difficulty accepting compliments. Isabelle Danet from IDC explains: "Some people, very perfectionistic and therefore rarely satisfied, can even develop a real fear of success!" In the end, a strange sensation, which manifests itself as "imposter syndrome." "I recently coached an executive who felt he didn't deserve his position, nor the recognition of his management who offered him a new position. He "knew" that it was his "kindness" that earned him his promotion, and that one day, people would realize this imposture." What about his professional skills?
Getting rid of harmful sensations
Imposter syndrome, fear of failure… Faced with these ineffective emotions, Isabelle Danet notes: "These sensations are like a black, shapeless magma that prevents you from moving forward. You need to take the necessary distance to observe the elements one by one, without emotions." You are not satisfied with file X? On reflection, you finished it on time: excellent organization. You sought outside advice to help you: useful precaution. "It's all a matter of self-perception," says Isabelle Danet, "your emotions should not be a filter that darkens your vision of things."
Moving from feeling to reality
And file Y that you still haven't finished. Is this a valid reason to doubt your effectiveness? Sometimes, external factors make it impossible to complete your projects. "You should never get stuck on unattainable goals. What you perceive as failure may simply be due to a tight deadline. These constraints are just facts, which you hadn't thought of and which nevertheless constitute reality… Set lighter goals that are possible to achieve."
Listening to and ordering one's emotions
However, in this context to be considered, emotions are often put aside. "Yet they are an integral part of reality. Try to stifle them, and they will come back stronger than ever." Isabelle Danet recounts the support of a team of hotline operators: "Faced with angry and demanding interlocutors, there's no point trying to suppress this felt tension! However, we invited them to warmly arrange their workplace with photos or objects of their loved ones, which they could see or touch to recharge. You must first be attentive to yourself in order to redirect your emotions!"
Promoting your skills
Revealing your talents means revealing them to yourself and to others. Isabelle Danet emphasizes: "Emotions are contagious. The good ones, as well as the bad ones." During a meeting with your manager, there's no need to list what you haven't had time to do. Isabelle Danet gives a concrete example: "See the huge difference between - I will never be able to give you file X on time - and - I wanted to spend two hours on file Z so that it would be perfect, can I give you file X at the end of the morning? -" Yet, it's the truth in both cases! So, have the talent to promote yours…
