Managers are increasingly investing in postgraduate studies, whether at the beginning or during their professional lives.
Should you choose a Master's or an MBA? This is the question that Moroccan managers ask themselves in the face of a multitude of offers from higher education institutions. One thing is certain, continuing education has become the best way for employees to boost their careers, by sharpening their technical knowledge in their field of action or by completely changing their vocation by opting for studies in a sector different from the one in which they work.
To better understand the needs of managers in terms of training, the advantages and limitations of the current market offer, the firm Invest RH recently published the results of a survey entitled: "Master/MBA: what do you think?" This study provided a qualitative and quantitative overview that should help any manager wishing to pursue higher education and truly understand the impact of this project on their professional and even personal life.
According to the announced results, there is a very strong enthusiasm among national managers to pursue postgraduate studies during their careers. Out of a sample of 750 respondents, 55.7% have already followed a Master's or MBA program, while 83.9% of the remaining respondents wish to pursue postgraduate studies within the next two years.
Masters' degrees are dominant among 62.4% of the managers approached, compared to 19.2% for MBA-type programs. Master's profiles are mainly from business schools (38%) with 3 to 5 years of experience. MBA profiles are mainly graduates of engineering schools (42.9%) with 10 to 15 years of professional experience.
Since the two programs are followed at different periods of life, the motivations of each category of managers are different. For Master's programs, the reasons guiding this choice are primarily professional, namely to advance their career, specialize in a specific field, and increase recruitment opportunities. In addition, for MBA programs, the choice is motivated by a desire to broaden responsibilities and eligibility for management positions.
In terms of the impact of these programs on an individual level, respondents stated that the impact translates into personal fulfillment through the strengthening of leadership, self-confidence, and openness to change. Professionally, these programs promote career advancement and improved work efficiency.
Regarding the existing market offer, the study reveals that 82.8% of these programs are pursued in Morocco, with a concentration in Casablanca at 56%. France is the leading country for MASTER-MBA programs pursued abroad, with 58.1%, followed by the USA and Canada.
EHTP, ESCAE, EMI, ENCG are among the most sought-after institutions. As for the preferred specializations, Management and Finance/accounting/management occupy the top spots. These programs are followed by those dedicated to purchasing/logistics/production management and communication/marketing and HR.
Location
Concerning funding, the study specifies that it is young managers who are increasingly putting their hands in their pockets to finance their increasingly expensive training, namely Master's programs that start at 30,000 DH and exceed 70,000 DH, and MBAs whose costs vary between 120,000 DH and more than 150,000 DH.
Self-financing accounts for 79.8%, compared to 10% of employer financing for Master's degrees, while for MBA programs, manager contributions are at 54.5%, while 22.5% of programs are financed by the employer.
In terms of satisfaction, the latter, declared at the MBA level (8.06/10), is more favorable than that of Master's programs (6.93/10).
The survey highlights that the common point of satisfaction concerns the group life and atmosphere during the training.
As for the aspects with the lowest level of satisfaction, these concern logistical aspects, communication with the administration, but especially the networking contacts obtained thanks to the training!
