CareerBuilder®, which claims to be the "world leader in human capital management solutions", recently conducted a study at the end of 2010 with 757 business leaders and recruiters from several European countries (France, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Sweden) to study their application screening process and draw lessons for candidates.

1- Here is the checklist of fatal errors in the eyes of ruthless, busy recruiters:

  1. Lies detected in the CV
  2. An unpersonalized CV for the position (54% of respondents)
  3. A CV of 3 pages or more (33%)
  4. A CV with dense and compact paragraphs that are difficult to read (31%)
  5. A CV with spelling mistakes or typos (12%)
  6. A CV in which the text of the advertisement has been copied to perfectly match (8%)
  7. A CV without a cover letter (6%)

2- In the CV, recruiters stated that they look for evidence of particular qualities. These are:
  • Communication skills (43%)
  • Problem-solving skills (41%)
  • Productivity (21%)
  • Leadership skills (14%)
  • Sales skills (14%)
  • Cost control (8%)
Among their most memorable experiences, recruiters cited email addresses containing a whimsical mention of being a beer lover, a skin color in the CV photo that didn't match the candidate's actual skin color as discovered during a Skype call, a CV written on a page torn from a notebook, or the exaggeration of mystery (names that cannot be mentioned because it's a secret).
