A South interregional meeting on employment in the governorates of Gabes, Medenine, Tataouine, Tozeur, Kebili and Gafsa was held on Saturday in Gabes.
The Minister of Vocational Training and Employment, Abdelwaheb Maattar, stressed the importance of employment for all Tunisians.
He highlighted the government's determination to involve the unemployed and civil society in developing choices and orientations to find adequate solutions to this issue.
Tunisia currently has 750,000 unemployed people (February 2012), 33.6% of whom are university graduates.
Credits allocated to Tunisia for job creation (2000 million dinars) were largely invested in unemployment benefits and the processing of various social situations and contributed little to job creation, he noted.
Unemployment is particularly acute in marginalized inland regions, including the southern governorates. The unemployment rate there is more than double the national average. He added that the government will opt for "positive discrimination" in these regions.
For his part, the Minister of State Domains and Land Affairs, Slim Ben Hmidane, emphasized the legitimate right to employment, stressing the need to rebuild the state on solid foundations and ensure equitable distribution of wealth.
The department is currently working to resolve land problems through measures to overcome obstacles to investment.
Participants in this meeting discussed several issues related to the inefficiency of certain employment mechanisms, bureaucracy in some administrations, favoritism and corruption.
They called for speeding up the announcement of results of civil service competitions and creating unemployment compensation.
Emphasis was placed on obstacles preventing young people from becoming self-employed, including the lack of industrial zones and a favorable investment climate, as well as the problem of project self-financing.
The forum, attended by representatives of political parties, professional organizations and associations in charge of the unemployed, is part of the preparations for the national employment congress scheduled for late April. (TAP)
