Tunis - Ministry of Commerce May Open Certain Sectors to Franchising

The Ministry of Commerce may announce, at the end of March 2013, the opening of more sectors to foreign franchising. Franchising, a vector of development and job creation, this business model is only authorized by Tunisian law for specific sectors.

These include distribution (ready-to-wear, shoes, gifts, perfumes, beauty and cosmetic products...), tourism (hotel management...), and other activities such as auto and electronic maintenance services. Tunisian franchisees, those who want to operate a foreign brand in sectors not authorized by Tunisian law, are required to obtain prior exceptional authorization from the Competition Council.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, to date, the Council has granted 6 authorizations for franchise agreements out of a total of 17 requests from franchisees who want to operate fast-food, advertising, cafes, modern commerce, real estate services and children's services brands.

According to the same source, negotiations are underway with Tunisian banks, as part of Tunisian-American cooperation, to provide them with guarantee funds for loans granted to finance franchise agreements.

It should be recalled that the 4th edition of the "Tunis-Medfranchise" trade fair will be held this year from February 27 to March 1, 2013, at the UTICA headquarters, under the theme "franchising, a promising future".
