The unemployment rate in Tunisia has dropped from 18.7% (in the aftermath of the revolution) to 15.3%. This was stated on Saturday, May 17, in Hammamet, by Hedi Triki, advisor to the Minister of Professional Training and Employment.
On the sidelines of the second national congress of associations, organized by the Tunisian Organization for Social Development, Triki indicated that the number of unemployed university graduates has fallen, for the first time after the revolution, to less than 200,000. Although below expectations, this rate is encouraging given the difficult economic situation prevailing in the country, he said.
The official stated that the Ministry of Professional Training and Employment is focusing on the micro-project creation incentive program as the main solution to the unemployment problem, emphasizing the important role of development associations in the success of this program through the support and training of project leaders to ensure the success of their projects.
He announced that the ministry has signed agreements with approximately 450 associations across the country, particularly in inland areas.
Triki indicated that the budget allocated to the self-financing support program, which is part of the micro-project creation incentive program, exceeds 70 million dinars. He added that six months after the launch of the self-financing support program, 4,150 applications have been approved, stating that the evaluation of this program will be carried out at the end of May 2014 to identify difficulties and find solutions to increase the number of beneficiaries.
He also announced that an exhibition of products from the beneficiaries of this program will be organized towards the end of May.
