Tunisia - Al Majd Party: The politics of alliances is useful

"Citizenship, Republic, Democracy" are the main foundations of the Al Majd party, the guest of honor at a breakfast-debate held on Saturday, May 28, 2011. During this meeting, Mr. Abdelwaheb El Hani, founder of the party, presented Al Majd's orientations and its program for the election period.

Mr. El Hani said he was in favor of a merger with other parties sharing the same visions and principles as Al Majd: "The politics of alliances is useful in the current situation, especially since we have entered into dialogue with several parties, of the average convergence that have the same objectives as our party to form a cartel."
In this context, he noted that his party recently signed an agreement at a forum bringing together six parties with the same approaches. The aim of this agreement is to strengthen their presence on the election lists. "In this way, citizens can easily identify the representatives in the next election," he added.
The founder of Al Majd also indicated that every citizen is capable of assuming political and national responsibilities, of running for the presidential election. On this subject, he mentioned the important role of the media in disseminating information on the orientations of the parties and monitoring their activities. Regarding orientations, the party presented urgent measures on various political, economic and social levels. It is imperative, according to Mr. El Heni, to support the High Independent Authority for Elections in maintaining the independence and sovereignty of the decision of the electoral process and fairness. This involves revising the electoral law relating to voting lists to ensure pluralism on the one hand and guarantee stability on the other.
Al Majd supports the effective participation of women in the Constituent Assembly by placing them at the head of their list. The goal is to overcome the issue of limited participation of women, according to the principle of parity and to ensure their presence of up to 30%.
Economically, the party calls for the recovery of frozen assets as soon as possible. According to Mr. El Heni, it is necessary to restore the rhythm of the economic wheel and reassure investors through social dialogue. The consecration of administrative decentralization and the development of mechanisms for controlling public finances are steps to be followed.
The revival of tourism is one of Al Majd's concerns by encouraging domestic tourism in particular to overcome the crisis. Ensuring the success of the current agricultural season is a priority to improve the economic situation. The party advocates for the preservation of economic institutions by helping them overcome the contested difficulties.
At the social level, it is essential to restore the security and confidence of citizens in public life and in particular politicians and the media. The party works to protect the right to difference and peaceful alternation in power. It also calls for the promotion of regional democracy. Improving the quality of life of needy families and vulnerable groups is a priority. Mr. El Heni stressed the importance of intensifying assistance and the dissemination of social coverage for disadvantaged regions.
The creation of job opportunities, especially for young graduates, is one of Tunisia's challenges in order to alleviate unemployment.
AL Majd is a centrist political party, of Maghreb, Arab and Islamic obedience, open to its African and Mediterranean dimensions.
