Tunisia: Call for the adoption of a national strategy for organizing the informal employment

A call for the adoption of a national strategy to organize informal employment, based on a participatory approach, was launched Wednesday in Tunis by a Tunisian association active in the field of social management.

The initiative was led by the Tunisian Association for Social Management and Stability (TAMSS), a socio-economic development and microfinance association oriented towards solving the problems of disadvantaged populations.

The round table organized on this occasion aims at developing recommendations and a roadmap that will be implemented in 2014. This document includes measures for the structuring of the informal sector, in consultation with the government, civil society and workers in the informal sector.

The president of TAMSS, Ms. Chema Gargouri, indicated that a survey conducted by the association on informal employment, the results of which were announced last June, revealed that unstructured employment is not a fatality but could be a choice to which the worker adheres to access material resources.

The association had launched, a year ago, the Tunisian initiative for inclusive employment aimed at finding a legal and economic framework for informal micro-entrepreneurs in order to ensure them decent working conditions and social and medical coverage. A program will be launched, to this effect, in collaboration with the private sector to help 80 informal micro-entrepreneurs in four regions of the country.

A guide containing useful information and advice for informal micro-entrepreneurs has been developed by TAMSS and will be published at the beginning of 2014.
