Tunisia: Unemployment Rate Decreased by 2.2% in 2012.

According to the Ministry of Vocational Training and Employment, citing the National Institute of Statistics, the unemployment rate in Tunisia decreased by 2.2% in 2012 compared to 2011, reaching 16.7% in the fourth quarter of 2012 compared to 18.9% during the same period in 2011.

The results of the national census on population and employment carried out by the INS indicate that every three months, the number of unemployed decreased from 738,000 at the beginning of 2012 to more than 653,000 at the end of 2012. The number of new jobs created during the last three months of 2012 thus amounts to 11,000, not including the results of most recruitment competitions in the civil service, which started at the end of 2012.

The unemployment rate among university graduates decreased from 34.2% in the first quarter of 2012 to 33.2% in the last quarter of 2012.

The unemployment rate for men decreased in the fourth quarter of 2012 to 13.9% compared to 15.4% during the same period in 2011. The results of the INS census show that the unemployment rate decreased in most regions except for the Tunis district where it increased from 17.2% in the last quarter of 2011 to 17.4% in the same period of 2012, specifies the same source.
