Even if modern commerce in Morocco only represents barely 10% of retail trade, it is clear to see the rapid pace of implementation of modern forms of commerce from the beginning of the 2000s. This implementation covers the entire country, notably the large cities, both on the outskirts and now in the heart of urban areas. The privatization processes underway, which began in the late 1980s, the concessions of public services to the private sector, and the unprecedented development of the franchise network, open new perspectives for investment in distribution. This exploratory work aims to shed light on the determining factors in the development of mass retail in Morocco (Part I). It also aims to analyze this dynamism in light of its coexistence with a vigorous traditional sector and to identify, through case studies, the types of knock-on effects of mass retail on agri-food SMEs (Part II). Finally, it questions the prospects for the development of this mass retail in view of its strengths and weaknesses, but also opportunities and threats (Part III).
