(Ecofin Agency) - Production at the Meknassy phosphate mine, located in the Sidi Bouzid region (central-west Tunisia), is scheduled to begin in 2015, reported the Tunisian news agency TAP on December 25.
Operation of this mine by the Compagnie des phosphates de Gafsa (CPG), Tunisia’s largest mining company, should generate 100 jobs in 2015 and around 400 jobs from 2016, according to Tunisian Minister of Employment and Vocational Training, Naoufel Jammali.
The CEO of CPG, Nejib Mrabet, also indicated that the production capacity of the Meknassy mine should reach approximately 600,000 tons per year, a much smaller volume than that extracted from the Gafsa phosphate mines (8 million tons per year on average).
According to him, geological studies conducted by CPG have demonstrated the good quality of the phosphates from the Meknassy mine.
