Tunisia: Japanese Promote Our Tourism

The Ministry of Tourism and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed an agreement on Tuesday in Tunis for a project to promote Saharan tourism in the regions of Tozeur and Kebili (Southern Tunisia). The main objective is to attract more Japanese and Asian tourists to the country.

This project, initiated and financed by JICA with an investment of around 5.4 million dinars, will be launched this month (October 2012) and will last 3 years, according to a statement from the Ministry of Tourism.

The project also plans to help Tunisia develop a marketing and communication strategy in Southern Tunisia to promote and publicize the tourist products and natural riches of these regions.

It also involves setting up a public-private partnership mechanism to implement concrete promotional strategies and activities. A joint coordination committee, composed of representatives from tourism structures and JICA, will be created in this context and will meet periodically in Tunis, the ministry's statement indicates.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Tourism, Elyes Fakhfakh, and the permanent director general of JICA in Tunis. "The project will be a great asset for promoting Saharan tourism in Tozeur and Kebili," estimates Elyes Fakhfakh.

The JICA director general indicated, during the signing ceremony, that the project will be presented at the next International Conference on African Development, to be held in 2013 in Tokyo, as a model of North-South cooperation. "It will provide jobs and reduce regional disparities," he added.
