"The employment situation in Tunisia is very sad," affirmed Hassen Zargouni, general director of Sigma Conseil, commenting on his presentation about the employment situation in Tunisia during a conference-debate organized by the CJD. At the end of March 2014, the number of unemployed in Tunisia was 650,800.
This figure is a 23.2% increase compared to 2010, which showed 491,800 unemployed. He also stated that the current unemployment rate is around 15.2%.
Furthermore, he noted that university graduates are at the top of the unemployed, with 245,000. As for the areas most affected by unemployment, he indicated that the unemployment rate reached 23.5% in the Southeast, 23.4% in the Southwest, and 19.7% in the Center-West.
In the same context, he reported that many young women from rural areas, giving up hope of finding jobs in big cities, are returning home and are no longer included in the statistics.
