Carlos Ghosn: "The Tanger factory will make Morocco an attractive hub for the global automotive industry"
The Tanger factory will make the Kingdom of Morocco an attractive hub for the global automotive industry, thanks in particular to its supplier park, its automotive training institute and its strategic position between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, underlined Thursday the CEO of the Renault-Nissan alliance, Carlos Ghosn.

The largest automobile factory south of the Mediterranean, in Africa and in the Arab world, the new Melloussa factory is the first to be built under Renault's leadership in the 21st century, said Ghosn, in a presentation to H.M. King Mohammed VI, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Renault-Nissan Tanger factory.

With an initial production capacity of 170,000 vehicles per year, which we will double by mid-2014, and a total investment of one billion euros, the new factory will play an essential role in supporting the development of our global sales, he added, specifying that, in the long term, the Tanger factory could reach a maximum production capacity of 400,000 vehicles per year.

This large-scale project, which will make it possible to replace our saturated Pitesti plant in Romania and to expand the range of our entry-level platform, starting with the Lodgy minivan, will above all become a key element in continuing the worldwide success of our entry-level range, he specified.

The Renault-Nissan Tanger factory will also be a key employment center for the Tangier region, creating 6,000 direct jobs and 30,000 indirect jobs in the long term.

In terms of the environment, Ghosn indicated that Morocco is thus home to the only automobile factory in the world to be zero CO2 emissions and zero industrial water discharge, noting that, with Veolia Environnement and the support of the National Electricity Office, more than 135,000 tons of CO2 emissions will be avoided each year, and water resource withdrawals will be reduced by 70%.

Present on all continents with more than 350 industrial and commercial sites in 118 countries, Renault designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of innovative, safe and environmentally friendly vehicles.

Renault is currently pursuing its strategy of profitable growth with its associated brands Dacia and Renault Samsung Motors. Renault employs 121,000 people, generates a turnover of 31,951 million euros (2009) and sold more than 2.3 million vehicles in 2009.

"Lodgy", produced in Tanger, marketed in spring

The Lodgy, a new model in Renault's low-cost vehicle range, which will come off the production lines of the Tanger-Med factory, is a minivan offered with five and seven real seats.

The car, which will be marketed from spring, from 12,000 euros in Europe, is true to the spirit of the brand. It offers plenty of space on board and essential features to meet the specific expectations of Dacia customers.

Specialists draw a parallel between this new vehicle and the Scenic, a mid-range Renault and twice as expensive.

This new minivan, guaranteed for three years, which will be presented for the first time at the Geneva International Motor Show in March, should appeal to families, usually customers of used cars, who want to buy a new versatile vehicle at a price within their reach.

"Generous in its proportions", according to its designers, the Lodgy displays the Dacia design codes: habitability, robustness and functionality. Its silhouette reflects "excellent habitability up to the third row while preserving an appreciable boot volume", all in a contained length of 4.5 meters.

Its name -Lodgy- evocative of the English "lodge", refers directly to its primary characteristic: its capacity to accommodate a family and its luggage.

A low-cost brand of the Renault Group, relaunched in 2004 with Logan, Dacia has become in 8 years a recognized player in the automotive market. Initiator of the "smart buying" spirit, Dacia has earned the trust of its customers thanks to its clear values: generosity, simplicity and reliability.

The range currently includes three pillar models: the Logan, in three-door sedan, station wagon (MCV), van and pick-up versions, the Sandero, in two-door sedan and off-roader (Stepway) versions, and the Duster, the SUV, in 4x2 and 4x4.
