The Moroccan Minister of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment, Fouad Douiri, indicated Friday that the strategy for developing the mining sector in Morocco aims to double the jobs generated by the sector to more than 30,000 direct jobs and triple the sector's turnover to more than 15 billion dirhams (MMDH), reported the MAP news agency.
The strategy also aims to multiply by 10 the volume of investment in mining exploration and research to nearly 4 billion dirhams, said Mr. Douiri at a press conference, organized on the occasion of the presentation of the main lines of this strategy.
"The main points of this strategy focus on developing investment in research and prospecting, promoting the market to attract national and international investors, updating regulations and enhancing the mining heritage," explained the minister.
It also provides for the implementation of several structuring pillars affecting the entire mining activity chain, exploration, research, exploitation, enhancement and processing of minerals, he added, noting that this includes the development of geological mapping, the development of investment and mining promotion to align with best practices in the sector.
Mr. Douiri also mentioned a proposal to overhaul mining taxation, the implementation of a program to develop training opportunities in the mining sector and a multi-year development plan aimed at revitalizing the national geological mapping plan by 2025.
In 2011, the mining sector generated a turnover excluding phosphates of 5.5 billion dirhams and created nearly 15,000 jobs. This export sector contributes to the economic and social development of remote areas in Morocco and contributes to the trade balance.
