Vision 2020: Conclusion of the Fes-Boulemane Program Contract

The program contract for the development of the tourism sector in the Fes-Boulemane region has been finalized and will be signed on December 4th, Tourism Minister Lahcen Haddad announced Tuesday.

The minister, who chaired a meeting in Fes with local authorities, elected officials, and tourism professionals, indicated that this plan, which is part of the implementation of Vision 2020, aims to create more than 45,000 additional jobs, increasing from the current 32,800 to more than 78,000 by 2020, and to significantly increase hotel capacity with the creation of 13,000 new beds.

This dynamic will also increase tourism revenue to reach 11.7 MDH in this region, he added, stressing that this innovative plan is based on diversifying the offer and encouraging new products to attract more foreign tourists.

Thus, the program contract is based on 4 complementary programs: "Heritage and Legacy," "Entertainment, Sports and Leisure," "High Value-Added Niches," and "Sustainable Eco-Development."

Haddad noted that the region's tourism development, mainly driven by the city of Fes, will increase the region's potential to become Morocco's second international cultural destination in synergy with the sites of Meknes and Ifrane.

The region's positioning will be articulated mainly around experiential culture and tangible heritage, particularly through a program aimed at enhancing cultural identity, restructuring tangible and intangible heritage, and putting in place coherent and attractive tourism products, he said.

The Minister of Tourism also indicated that the region's rich cultural and natural assets will be highlighted in this plan to ensure a multiplicity of positions and targets through programs aimed at creating a rich and complementary entertainment offer and infrastructure to host major international events and create synergies with the sports and wellness, entertainment and culture segments.

For the success of this ambitious plan for the development and promotion of regional tourism, he urged elected officials and professionals to combine their efforts to allow the Fes and region destination to fully play its role in realizing Vision 2020 and thus contribute to socio-economic development and job creation in the region.

For its part, the director of the Moroccan society of tourism engineering indicated that the program contract for the Fes-Boulemane region focuses on the implementation of 30 tourism projects at a cost of around 8 billion DH, of which 7.6 billion DH will be covered by the private sector and the rest by public authorities.

These projects will be implemented in the various prefectures and provinces of the region, including 12 in Fes, 11 in Sefrou, and 4 in Moulay Yacoub, and will target niches such as the enhancement of heritage and legacy, entertainment, sports, leisure, the enhancement of natural resources, and respect for socio-cultural authenticity, he added.

In particular, this includes the creation of a heritage interpretation center in the Fes Medina, an ethnographic museum in Sefrou, the development of a spirituality trail, and the restoration of medersas and foundouks.
