Give young Ivorian students the opportunity to discover the business world
The political, economic, and social situation in Ivory Coast has steadily worsened since the October 2010 elections. Since December, scholarships and parental support have become increasingly unreliable. The students' situation has become critical over the months. In Casablanca alone, an estimated one thousand cases have been recorded. 75% are boys and 25% are girls.
Today:
Rent deposits have been used up, and students find themselves homeless or forced into nearly uninhabitable shared housing.
It is increasingly difficult for them to feed themselves.
The cost of transportation from their accommodation to their studies has become an impossible burden to manage.
The average resources of students are currently very low, in addition to parental support which varies. Parents are increasingly struggling to find or even earn money.
Given that the average budget of a student in Casablanca can be broken down as follows:
• 1000 dh average rent in shared housing
• 300 dh for food
• Between 600 and 800 dh for transport
• 200 dh miscellaneous
• Totaling between 2100 and 2300 dh on average.
To prevent these students from losing their academic year, emergency aid should be implemented to supplement the small support provided by Caritas and the student support service in Casablanca.
• Scholarships should be paid directly to the Moroccan government, which would handle their redistribution, instead of being paid to the embassy.
• Banks should provide loans, guaranteed by the disbursement of scholarships.
• An exceptional grant should be released by the National Initiative for Human Development or National Mutual Aid.
These students were selected from among the brightest in their home country and all have excellent academic records. They will be the future leaders and developers of a new Africa. Upon their return, they will be the best ambassadors for Morocco.
