Whether on leave or not, we are used, even conditioned, to working, to checking our emails, to monitoring our cell phones…
How to take a real, well-deserved break?
Here are some basic tips that will probably allow you to write your letter to Santa Claus without being interrupted by your work, for a few hours.
1. Reassure yourself.
During the year-end period, many companies operate at a slower pace. Rest assured, therefore: you are not the only one who needs to slow down and rest. Rest assured, yes: even customers are on vacation…!
In addition, relaxing – which does not in any way mean ignoring and forgetting everything – will give you the energy you need to start the new year even more efficiently. Get rid of your guilt.
2. Let people know.
The best way to be absent for a few days with a free mind is to prepare the ground by letting your colleagues and clients know well in advance what period you plan to take these days off. Set your dates early and remind them. Also think – and this is not a detail – about suggesting contact people, relays.
Don't forget to set up your mailbox so that an automatic 'out of office' email replies for you while you are away.
3. Choose the right relay.
Don't choose just anyone if you want peace of mind. Choose THE reliable colleague who will be able to make urgent decisions during your absence. Of course, you will be in contact, but consider giving them all the necessary information well in advance so that their decisions are well-founded and sensible.
4. Cut the wire to cut the cord.
Ideally, if you can manage it, cut off your Blackberry/iPhone/Computer/iPad…
Try putting your "professional weapons" in a cupboard. Of course, this is not about leaving them there, but about setting a frequency for checking your emails, etc., which you should not exceed!
5. Set accessibility hours.
Because everyone needs it, because regular contact with the office is required, establish a kind of accessibility schedule, those few moments where you agree to be at the office in thought.
Outside these chosen periods, your colleagues will know that you are resting.
